BT TV service terms

These terms and conditions apply from 7th October 2015

RECENT UPDATES TO THESE TERMS

We've made some changes to these terms which are detailed below:

  • We've added a new term to cover additional content and bonus channels that we provide at no cost – see paragraph 71.
  1. We provide the BT TV* service by one of two means: either the Player service or the Box service. With the Box service we provide you with access to Freeview channels, rental Video on Demand (VOD) content and certain other optional channels. You can also choose to access the content available on the Box service on a second set top box at the same home address by purchasing a BT TV app with Extra Box subscription. Whereas with the Player service we provide you with only the option to take VOD content and certain other optional channels. You can choose to receive the BT TV service by either method. We may also provide BT TV content available for you to purchase for a one off charge.

Player service

What we provide

  1. The Service provides content streamed to an independently purchased compatible set-top box, and features a range of BT TV VOD content payable either on a rental Pay Per View (PPV) or subscription basis or where available at no additional charge, and additional encrypted broadcast channels (chargeable or otherwise) provided over the BT Infinity network where available. We may also make BT TV content available for you to purchase for a one off charge. BT TV app with Extra Box is not available with the Player service.
  2. The Player service and Player subscriptions are not available if you have or are taking the Box service.

When the service starts

  1. We will begin the Player service and the minimum period will start as soon as we activate the Player service (service start date).
  2. The minimum period for any Player service taken on a subscription basis prior to 1 August 2013 is 1 month. The minimum period for any Player service taken on a subscription basis from 1 August 2013 onwards is 12 months.

Using the service

  1. Unless you take a minimum 12 month BT TV promotion, any on demand video content you watch on your set top box that is not provided by BT will count towards the download limit for BT Broadband (where applicable).

Content availability

  1. We can add to, change or withdraw VOD content available for rental, purchase or subscription at any time. We will tell you before we make any changes to your subscription service.

Our responsibility to you

  1. We have no responsibility for any set top boxes or other hardware not specifically supplied by us for use with the Player service which you use in connection with the Player service. We may upgrade or replace all or some of the software on your set top box at any time, even if this agreement for the Player service ends. We are not responsible for the loss of any content previously recorded or scheduled recordings you may have set up if we upgrade or replace all or some of the software on your set top box at any time.

Box service

What we provide

  1. The Set Top Box that we provide to you for use with the Box service will be either a BT Vision+ box, a YouView+ box or a YouView+ Ultra HD box.
  1. The Box service we give you includes:
  1. Access to a range of content including:
    1. BT TV on-demand content payable either on a rental Pay Per View or subscription basis or where available at no additional charge;
    2. BT TV content available for you to purchase for a one off charge;
    3. Freeview digital TV and radio ; and
    4. additional encrypted broadcast channels (chargeable or otherwise) provided over the Digital Terrestrial Television, the BT Infinity network where available, or over BT Copper Broadband. Where we agree to provide these channels over BT Copper Broadband you will only be able to receive these channels if you have a minimum line speed of 5mbs. If your line speed drops below 5mbs the channels will cease to work over BT Copper Broadband;
  2. a selection of communication services where available;
  3. a selection of interactive content and services where available; and
  4. installation of the equipment where you select or need the engineer install option. We may need to provide a new telephone extension socket close to your selected television to do this.
  1. If you have a BT Vision+ box the Box service we agree to give you includes the ability to view BT TV on-demand content only and view, record and playback Freeview digital TV, radio and any other additional broadcast channels (chargeable or otherwise) made available through your television aerial or broadband service and the BT Vision+ box (provided you maintain a BT TV Subscription or have paid the full standard price for the BT Vision+ box when you placed your order). You will not be able to view and/or record more than one channel delivered over BT Copper Broadband to a BT TV platform at any one time. You can continue to view any channel broadcast over Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) whilst recording one of the channels delivered over BT Copper Broadband and vice versa. If you have a BT Vision+ box the Box service we agree to give you also includes the ability to purchase BT TV content provided you have a BT TV subscription.
  1. If you have a YouView+ box provided by BT the Box service we agree to give you includes the ability to
  1. view BT TV on-demand content provided you maintain a BT TV Subscription or have paid the full standard price for the box when you placed your order, (except with BT TV app with Extra Box you will only be able to view BT TV on-demand content on your second YouView+ or YouView box provided by BT if you maintain a BT TV subscription); –and

  2. view on-demand content not provided by BT but made available via the YouView box (subject to the supplier's terms and conditions), and view, pause and rewind Freeview digital TV, radio and any other additional broadcast channels (chargeable or otherwise) made available through your television aerial or broadband service and the YouView box provided by BT. The length of time that you can pause and rewind on a YouView box is less than you can do on a YouView+ box; and
  3. purchase BT TV content.
  1. If you have a YouView+ Ultra HD box provided by BT the Box service we agree to give you includes the ability to
  1. view BT TV on-demand content provided you maintain a BT TV Subscription or have paid the full standard price for the box when you placed your order, (except with BT TV app with Extra Box you will only be able to view BT TV on-demand content on your second YouView+ or YouView box provided by BT if you maintain a BT TV subscription); and

We will agree a date with you for delivery and/or installation of any equipment. If the delivery of any equipment is delayed for reasons outside of our control we will let you know and take steps to minimise the delay. We will not be liable to you for such delays.
  1. To qualify for certain add-ons, offers or deals, you will need a BT TV subscription, as set out in the Tariff Guide. Details of our current BT TV subscriptions, offers and deals are set out at www.bt.com/tv

Ultra HD

  1. You can view ultra HD content provided by BT in ultra HD as long as you have:
  1. a BT TV Total Entertainment subscription;
  2. a YouView+ Ultra HD set top box provided by BT as your main set top box;
  3. BT Infinity Fibre broadband with a fast enough line speed; and
  4. an Ultra HD TV which is able to support HDCP2.2 content protection and a picture resolution of 2160p50 (sometime known as 50Hz) over the same HDMI port.
  1. It is your responsibility to check that your Ultra HD TV is compatible with the requirements set out above. We have compiled a list of TVs (at www.bt.com/help/ultrahd) that we have tested or been informed by the TV manufacturers as being compatible but you must check the TV manufacturer's product information yourself to verify compatibility.
  1. We will not accept any responsibility if your TV does not support the display of Ultra HD content broadcast by BT.

BT TV app with Extra Box

  1. Except for any ultra HD channels or content, a BT TV app with Extra Box subscription lets you view the content available through the Box service on a second set top box at the same home address provided you have:
  1. a YouView+ box, YouView box or YouView+ Ultra HD box provided by BT as your main set top box;
  2. a second YouView+ or YouView box provided by BT if your main set top box is a YouView+ box or YouView+ Ultra HD box provided by BT, or a second YouView box provided by BT if your main set top box is a YouView box provided by BT;
  3. BT Infinity Fibre broadband with a fast enough line speed; and
  4. d. A BT TV Essential, Entertainment, Entertainment Plus or Entertainment Max subscription if you have a YouView+ box provided by BT as your main set top box, or a TV Starter, or Entertainment Starter subscription if you have a YouView box provided by BT as your main set top box or a TV Total Entertainment subscription if you have a YouView+ Ultra HD box provided by BT as your main set top box.
  1. You cannot take the BT TV app with Extra Box and Sky Movies or Sky Sports 1 and/or Sky Sports 2 subscriptions together; if you have a BT TV app with Extra Box subscription you will not be able to purchase a Sky Movies or Sky Sports 1 and/or Sky Sports 2 subscription and vice versa.
  1. If you currently have a BT Vision+ box as your primary set top box, you will need to upgrade it to a YouView+ box provided by BT before you can take a BT TV app with Extra Box subscription. YouView+ and YouView box purchase and upgrade prices are set out in the Tariff Guide. You will need a second YouView+ and YouView box provided by BT for BT TV app with Extra Box.
  2. You may only take one BT TV app with Extra Box subscription with one additional set top box per BT Broadband line.
  3. The minimum period for a BT TV app with Extra Box subscription is 12 months. If you purchase a second YouView+ or YouView box provided by BT and do not pay the full purchase price for the box, you will also need to agree to a new minimum period for your BT TV and BT Broadband subscription.
  4. If you have a BT TV app with Extra Box subscription and you rent BT TV on-demand content on your primary set top box you will not be able to watch that content on your second set top box or on other devices, and if you rent BT TV on-demand content on your second set top box you will not be able to watch that content on your primary set top box or on other devices.
  5. Your BT TV app with Extra Box subscription will also let you stream a selection of the same channels available through the Box service to a compatible device (other than your set top boxes), access the BT TV electronic programme guide on a compatible device and, if you have a YouView+ box or a Youview+ Ultra HD box provided by BT as your main set top box, remotely record content to your set top box from a compatible device provided:
  1. you have an adequate internet connection for your compatible device;
  2. we are able to obtain and/or maintain sufficient permissions from the owners of the content; and
  3. you take an Extra Box

We will not be responsible to you if the content or the ability to remotely record is not available to you due to lack of an adequate internet connection or problems with your network coverage, unless we provide your internet connection as well, in which case we will only be responsible to you in the circumstances set out in the BT Broadband Service Terms. You cannot take TV Everywhere without Extra Box. You will not be able to stream any ultra HD channels to a compatible device.

  1. The ability to remotely record on your devices is only available if you have a YouView+ box provided by BT or a YouView+ Ultra HD box provided by BT and is not available if you access BT TV app with Extra Box via the BT TV Everywhere website (www.bt.com/tv).
  2. Information about compatible devices can be found at www.bt.com/help/tveverywhere. We will update the system requirements for compatible devices from time to time and make that information available on this website. It is your responsibility to make sure the device you use meets these system requirements.
  3. You will need to download the BT TV app or software onto your device in order to stream content to your device or remotely record content from your device to your YouView+ box.
  4. You will need a BT ID in order to access content on a compatible device (other than your set top boxes). You are responsible for keeping your BT ID username and password secure and confidential and you must not disclose it to any third party under any circumstances. You must take all reasonable precautions to prevent them being used by someone else. You are responsible for any activities that occur through the use of your BT ID login details. If you know or suspect that your BT ID login details have been compromised, or you suspect or become aware of any other breach of security, you must tell us immediately. In these circumstances, you must also ensure that your BT ID password is changed as soon as possible. If we believe that there has been, or is likely to be, a breach of security of your BT ID details, we may suspend your BT ID login privileges. We will in these circumstances require that your password is changed. If so we will restrict your access to content on devices (other than your set top boxes) until your BT ID password has been changed.
  5. You will be required to register your devices in accordance with the instructions we give you or as set out on the website at www.bt.com/help/tveverywhere. You will not be able to register more than 2 devices (excluding your set top boxes) at any one time. Where you have 2 devices registered you will be able to de-register 1 device and register a new device in its place once during any 30 day period.
  6. Each time you download the BT TV app to a device you will be required to agree to an End User Licence Agreement before being able to view any content.
  7. From time to time you may be asked to update your BT TV app or software in order to continue accessing content on your device. If we ask you to do this you may be required to re-enter your BT ID.
  8. You will not be able to stream the same content to more than two compatible devices at any one time (not including your set top boxes). You must only stream content in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and Isle of Man. You must not transfer or make any copies of any content, and you will not be able to transfer or copy any content from one device to another.
  9. You will be responsible for any costs charged by your mobile network and/or third party internet service provider in relation to the provision of mobile network coverage and/or broadband internet connection necessary to access the content.
  10. If you end your main BT TV subscription, your BT TV app with Extra Box subscription will automatically end at the same time. If you delete the BT TV app or disconnect your Extra Box, this does not end your BT TV app with Extra Box subscription.

TV Everywhere (without Extra Box) as part of the Entertainment Plus, Entertainment Max or Total Entertainment subscription

  1. The BT TV app without Extra Box is only available as part of the Entertainment Plus, Entertainment Max or Total Entertainment subscription.
  2. The BT TV app included in the Entertainment Plus, Entertainment Max or Total Entertainment subscription, will let you stream a selection of the same channels available through the Box service to a compatible device (other than your set top box), access the BT TV electronic programme guide on a compatible device and, if you have a YouView+ box provided by BT as your main set top box, remotely record content to your set top box from a compatible device provided
  1. you have an adequate internet connection for your compatible device; and
  2. we are able to obtain and/or maintain sufficient permissions from the owners of the content.

We will not be responsible to you if the content or the ability to remotely record is not available to you due to lack of an adequate internet connection or problems with your network coverage, unless we provide your internet connection as well, in which case we will only be responsible to you in the circumstances set out in the BT Broadband Service Terms. You will not be able to stream any ultra HD channels to a compatible device.

  1. The ability to remotely record on your devices is only available if you have a YouView+ box provided by BT or a YouView+ Ultra HD box provided by BT and is not available if you access TV Everywhere via the BT TV Everywhere website (www.bt.com/tv).
  2. Paragraphs 27 to 35 above apply also to the BT TV app included with the Entertainment Plus, Entertainment Max or Total Entertainment subscription

Deferred Payment for the Set Top Box(s)

  1. We will supply one or more set top boxes for use with the service which will be either a BT Vision+ box, a YouView+ box, a YouView box or YouView+ Ultra HD box for the Box Service, and a YouView+ or YouView box for any BT TV app with Extra Box subscription. In some cases we will allow you to defer payment of all or part of the full price for each set top box we supply. If we do this and you then end a subscription for which a set top box was supplied within 12 months of BT accepting your order for that set top box, then except where you cancel the service within the cancellation period (as detailed in paragraphs 10 & 11 of the Residential Standard Terms), you will be liable to pay a charge. We will charge you, for each month remaining of the 12 month period from the date we accepted your order, one 12th of the balance – that is, the price of the set top box as set out in the Tariff Guide, less any amount which you paid upfront for that set top box when you placed your order. If you keep a subscription for which we supplied a set top box for 12 months or more, you will not have to pay anything for that set top box if you later end the subscription for which the set top box was supplied.
  2. If, within 12 months of BT accepting your order for the service, you downgrade the level of the service that you had originally agreed to receive from BT, to a level which normally features an upfront charge for the Set Top Box that is more than you paid when you originally ordered the service, you will be charged the balance. This will be the difference between the price you paid for the Set Top Box and the price, as set out in the Tariff Guide that you would have paid had you taken the service at the reduced level instead.
  3. Any deferred payment for the Set Top Box payable if you end the service within 12 months of the date on which BT accepted your order for the Set Top Box, will take account of any increased upfront payment that you have made for the Set Top Box as a result of downgrading your original service level.

Quality of service

  1. The availability of BBC iPlayer in High Definition for a BT Vision+ box is subject to certain requirements and is not guaranteed for all customers. BBC iPlayer and any other catch up TV is not part of the Box service if you have a YouView+, YouView or YouView+ with Ultra HD box provided by BT.
  2. The quality of content provided over the digital terrestrial television (DTT) platform and the number of channels, if any, that you can receive is dependent on the quality of the broadcast from your local television transmitter, the quality of your television aerial and the availability of Freeview in your area. We are not responsible for this.
  3. We may upgrade or replace all or some of the software on your Set Top Box(s) at any time, even if this agreement for the Box service ends.

Using the service

  1. If you have a BT Vision+ box your use of the service will not count towards any download limit applicable under your BT Broadband agreement.
  2. Unless you take a minimum 12 month BT TV promotion, any on demand video content that is not provided by BT that you watch on your YouView+ box, YouView box or YouView+ Ultra HD box, will count towards the download limit for BT Broadband (where applicable).
  3. You will need a Set Top Box from BT to use the service, which we will provide. You may also need certain other equipment to use the service, which we will also provide. This includes optional Broadband Extenders (Powerline Adaptors) (not suitable for use with BT TV app with Extra Box or with TV Total Entertainment), which will be needed if your Set Top Box from BT is not positioned close to your BT Home Hub. We will also supply mains transformers and any connecting leads. The charges for the Set Top Box and optional Broadband Extenders (Powerline Adapters) are set out in the Tariff Guide and we will inform you of these charges when you place your order with us. If you have a YouView+ box, a YouView box or a YouView+ Ultra HD box provided by BT, in order to use the Box service, you will also need to agree to and accept:
  1. the YouView service terms and conditions which cover YouView's provision of and your access to and use of the YouView service; and
  2. YouView's privacy policy.

We are not responsible for the method of accessing the Box service on your TV via the YouView user interface.

  1. Unless you cancel your agreement as set out in paragraphs 10 and 11 of the Residential Standard Terms, you will own the Set Top Box and any other equipment needed to use the service from the date you receive it.
  2. Unless you have paid the full price for the Set Top Box upfront, you must connect the Set Top Box to your BT Home Hub, a suitable television aerial and your television within 30 days of the service start date and keep it connected for at least 12 months from the date that we accepted your order for the Set Top Box.
  3. If you have not followed the instructions in paragraph 51, your agreement for the service will end. We may end your agreement for the service if you have not followed the instructions in paragraph 51.

Content availability

  1. We may change the content that we supply as part of the service from time to time. This means that:
  1. access to Freeview digital TV and radio and any other channels broadcast over the digital terrestrial television (DTT) platform or over your broadband service – whether or not these channels form part of any subscription you may take with BT TV – are subject to availability and BT is not responsible for the continuing broadcast of these channels;
  2. we can add to, change or withdraw VOD content available for rental, purchase or subscription and /or any channels available as part of the BT TV service at any time. Except as set out in paragraph 53c, we will tell you before we make any changes to your subscription service;
  3. occasionally we may withdraw channel(s) that form part of your subscription service and we may not have time to tell you beforehand, but we will tell you as soon as we can;
  4. sometimes we may withdraw certain subscription packs of channels (Pack(s)) and/or change the Pack you are subscribing to. If we change or withdraw the Pack you are subscribing to we will move you onto the nearest equivalent Pack and we will give you at least 30 days' notice of any change.
  1. If:
  1. we believe the loss of the channel(s) referred to in paragraph 53c is likely to cause you material disadvantage; or
  2. under paragraph 53d we move you to a Pack that costs you more,

you will have 30 days from the day you receive our written notification to call and tell us you want to end your contract for BT TV, on up to 30 days' notice to us. If you do so you will not be charged the higher price for BT TV if paragraph 54b applies (if you have already paid the higher price we will refund the difference to you in your next or final bill), and if you are still in a minimum contract term for BT TV, you won’t have to pay early termination charges for ending your contract early.

  1. Some channels are only available in certain areas.

Our responsibility to you

  1. We are not responsible for the loss of any content previously recorded or scheduled recordings you may have set up, if:
  1. you have your Set Top Box repaired at any time;
  2. we require you to return your Set Top Box for a replacement;
  3. we upgrade or replace all or some of the software on your Set Top Box at any time even if this agreement for the Box service ends; or
  4. recordings are automatically deleted to either free up space on your set top box or because the recordings have been on your set top box for a considerable period of time.

Changing your subscription

  1. You may change your current viewing pack and/or add-on (both as described in the Tariff Guide) to another at any time and you will then be charged at the rate for the new viewing pack and/or add-on. Any credit or debit will be detailed on your bill. If you change your viewing pack and/or add-on, you must keep your new viewing pack and/or add-on for at least one month before you can change it again.
  2. If you took BT TV service as part of a package of other services, such as telephone and broadband, your ability to change your current BT TV subscription may be restricted. For more information, please refer to the terms and conditions for your chosen service package as set out in the Tariff Guide and/or information we sent out to you at the time you started your subscription.

  1. We aim to provide a continuous, high-quality service. From time to time faults in the service may occur. We will repair these faults as soon as we can.
  2. Although we take precautions, the accuracy or completeness of the interactive content that we provide to you including the Electronic Programme Guide may sometime be incorrect. 1. You will need to meet any requirements set out online at www.bt.com/tv and have your BT Broadband service activated, working and have passed a minimum line speed test that we will perform in order to receive the service. You will need BT Infinity Fibre Broadband for some BT TV services.
  2. Your use of the service may reduce your BT Broadband line speed for other internet based services.
  3. The service is intended for home use only. Any content provided as part of the service and any recordings of such content should only be viewed in the private household or dwelling to which the service is registered. You must not:

  2. to generate statistics to help us improve our service, understand what interests our viewers and to measure how effective our advertising is.

Content availability

  1. We set out how we provide subscription based VOD content in detail in the Tariff Guide. Additional add-on or catch up content may be made available for an additional charge or provided free with VOD subscriptions. Add-ons or additional catch up content may not be available with all VOD subscriptions. Availability of add-ons is detailed online at www.bt.com/tv.
  2. We provide a wide range of content via TV channels and video on demand, but sometimes for reasons outside of our control certain content may not be available.
  3. TV services/products including the volume and type of channels and on demand content delivered by BT TV, may differ from equivalent products/services provided by third parties.
  4. Where content is withdrawn by its supplier or becomes unavailable as part of the service, we will try to offer equivalent, similar or alternative content instead, but where this is not possible we will, if appropriate, remove or reduce any charge previously payable for that content. We will continue to supply all other content that is part of the service you have selected and you must continue to pay for that content, as well as any other services that are needed in order to receive the TV service. Paragraph 69 does not apply to BT TV content that you have purchased.
  5. Sometimes we may choose to give you access to additional content or bonus channels at no extra cost in addition to your chosen subscription. Any additional content or bonus channels we provide are not part of your subscription and we can change or withdraw them at any time without prior notice. If we plan to charge for any additional content or bonus channels we are currently providing without charge, we will tell you in advance and you will be need to tell us that you want to continue receiving the chargeable content or channels to avoid them being withdrawn at the point that we start charging for them.

Our responsibility to you

  1. If you are unable to receive rental BT TV Pay Per View on-demand content because of a fault in the BT TV service, we will credit you with any charge that you have paid for that content.
  2. If you are unable, for a prolonged and continuous period, to view certain broadcast channels delivered over your broadband that you may have subscribed to or content as part of your BT TV VOD content subscription because of a fault in the BT TV service, we will credit you with a proportion of the subscription charge you have paid for the affected content during the affected month. You must contact us to report such a fault if we agree to your claim, we will arrange for a credit to be made to you.
  3. If you are unable to receive any purchased BT TV content, delivered over your BT broadband because either:
  1. we tell you there is a fault in the BT TV service or BT Broadband service that we cannot fix, or
  2. you move home to an area where the BT TV service is unavailable, we will at our discretion either provide you with a DVD of the purchased BT TV content or credit you with the price you have paid for your purchased BT TV content.

  1. Occasionally, we may have to interrupt the service. If we do so, we will restore it as quickly as we can. We may also make minor changes to certain technical specifications.
