BT has been rolling out up to 20Mb broadband out across the UK since 2008. 40% of the country can already receive this faster speed, with 55% expected by March 2010. Your local telephone exchange needs to be upgraded for you to get up to 20Mb. Enter your BT phone number in the checker above for details on when up to 20Mb is available to you.
We always offer you the best speed available on your line. Unlike some other providers, we don't charge you more to go faster, we offer our top speed across all our broadband options, at no extra cost. The speed you can expect will still depend on your line and distance from the exchange.
If you're an existing BT Total Broadband customer, you can upgrade your speed at no extra cost, just by renewing your broadband contract.
If you're a new customer and up to 20Mb broadband is already available in your area, then you will get it with any new BT Total Broadband Option.
We always offer you the best speed available on your line. From our tests, we've found that only a tiny number of customers can actually get 24Mb. Other ADSL broadband providers are similarly affected by the same factors that determine broadband speed so we would encourage you get an individual speed estimate from any ISP you consider before purchasing.
The BT Home Hub has been future-proofed and will work with up to 20Mb speeds. If you don't have a BT Home Hub, see if your broadband router will work with the faster speeds.
Even if up to 20Mb broadband is available in an area we still have to upgrade each individual phone line, but we'll make sure we upgrade your line as quickly as we can.
The connection speed you receive depends on how far you live from your telephone exchange, the length of your telephone line and the quality of your internal home wiring.
The further you live from the telephone exchange, the lower the broadband speed your line can support. The great news is we're giving you this increase at no extra cost and we'll always give you the best speed your line can support. You may be able to increase your broadband speed even more with the BT Broadband Accelerator. If you don't already have one, we're now offering a BT Broadband Accelerator free* to all BT Total Broadband customers. Find out more at www.bt.com/accelerator.

Most people will see their speed improve on the up to 20Mb service, but some may not. This is because the connection speed we estimate you'll receive depends on how far you live from your telephone exchange, the length of your telephone line and the quality of your internal home wiring. The further you live from the exchange, the lower the broadband speed your line can support and the lower the improvement you're likely to get.
You may be able to increase your broadband speed with the BT Broadband Accelerator. If you don't already have one, we're now offering a BT Broadband Accelerator free* to all BT Total Broadband customers. Please wait at least one week after your broadband has been installed before ordering a BT Broadband Accelerator. Find out more at www.bt.com/accelerator.
* postage fee of £1.20 applies
We don't have upgrade dates the whole country yet, but the speed checker will be updated with the most up to date information as soon as it's available.
